Key geological events of the last 4 billion years have shaped Australia’s present-day environment, economy and society. Rocks that preserve this history and underpin our economy include Pilbara Banded Iron Formations (BIFs) and Permian coal measures of the Sydney-Gunnedah-Bowen basins. Early Paleozoic gold-bearing metasediments from Victoria sparked the 1850s Gold Rush and brought many new immigrants and cultures to Australia. Cretaceous shales that cap the Great Artesian Basin record the inland sea where giant marine reptiles swam over 100 million years ago. Cenozoic limestones along the southern margin represent the formation of the island continent and our long isolation that has resulted in our unique flora and fauna.
