Bob’s Peak which rises 450m above Queenstown provides breath-taking panoramic views across Lake Wakatipu so it’s easy to see why Ian Hamilton set his sights on this hill for his road-making efforts. In the summer of 1961, Ian Hamilton (a.k.a ‘Hammy’) joined forces with Darrell McGregor and local businessman Hylton Hensman - bit by bit they inched their way up to Bob’s Peak.
"After Hammy had built the road up to Bob’s Peak, all that was there was a bare hillside, but the view was such that everybody wanted to come and see it." Jon Dumble, Original Chalet Manager.
In 1963 Skyline Tours Ltd was born; a small fleet of Volkswagen vans would shuttle people up to the view. The trips were intermittent at first but a regular schedule soon developed. The bus took 20 minutes to get up, allowed 20 minutes to admire the view (later people would spend 40 minutes to an hour on top for refreshments at the Chalet) and 20 minutes back down. Bob’s Peak was established as the place to go!
