After we finished up the train songs, we continued to chat with Doyle and Caleb as we put away equipment, etc. Thankfully, Tipper left the camera rolling for parts of that conversation. I mentioned to Doyle that the first song I ever heard him play was one that he wrote, "Nothing's too Good for a Friend." Doyle played it for us, and I was astonished to see that he played all of it, just like on the record, with only one guitar. I usually have a pretty good ear for what's going on in a record, even if it's something I can't play. I was pretty sure that I was hearing two guitars. Nope, Doyle was doing all the parts at one time with one guitar. :-) Unfortunately, the camera wasn't rolling for that song, but it was for "The Road to Naplai!" It's my blessing to be able to share it with all of you! Although I've never been to any part of the Hawaiian Islands, this song, and the way Doyle plays it, truly makes me envision a beautiful sunset and coastline. It just has that sound. It was the perfect musical close to our special day spent with him and Caleb. At the end of this video, you can hear me off to the side saying that I "can't decide." Earlier in the day, I had said that my favorite Doyle Dykes song was "Nothing's too Good for a Friend," until I heard "The Lights of Marfa;" then for a while, I decided that it might be "Birmingham Steel." "The Visitation" and "The Road to Napali" are also now in the running for my favorite. Then there's "White Rose for Heidi." It's pretty hard to decide. :-) If you get Doyle's book, The Lights of Marfa, you can see and hear him play most of these songs with a lot of other top-notch, legendary players, like Duane Eddy, Jimmy Capps, Andy Leftwich, and more. The DVD comes tucked inside the book! Watching the video isn't as magical as being right there in the room with Doyle while he played it, but it's the next best thing, and we hope you enjoyed it.
