I've recently read Cormac McCarthy's The Road for the third time and it does seem that the little boy is all in his mind, rather than a flesh and blood character.
I forgot to mention the most important part in the video, on page 275;
'He looked across the water to the country beyond.
What are we going to do Papa? he said.
Well, what are we, said the boy.'
That is absolutely the man having a conversation with himself, and the strange structure of the conversation, I feel, proves it.
