The Mississippi River was the lifeline of the Confederacy, a north-south artery that fed and supplied its armies and its people. The Lincoln administration knew that seizing the river would choke the South. By 1863, the Union controlled nearly all of it, except for two stubborn strongholds: Port Hudson, Louisiana, and Vicksburg, Mississippi.
