In early 2023, deep fissures emerged in Israeli politics and society over proposed reforms to the country’s judiciary. Those reforms sought to push back against what many saw as a decades-long arrogation of power by unaccountable and unelected judges on the Supreme Court of Israel. In his new book, Rogue Justice: The Rise of Judicial Supremacy in Israel, Yonatan Green, fellow at the Georgetown Center for the Constitution, shows how Israel’s court transformed itself from a modest judicial institution into one of the most powerful in the world and what the implications of that shift are for Israeli law and democracy.
