On their second album, recorded on New Year’s Eve, 1972 in New York, and released on India Navigation records in 1973, The Revolutionary Ensemble performed a graphic score by Wadada Leo Smith (see Smith’s later discussion of the piece here: youtube.com/watch?v=FQXcw0fXabA&ab_channel=ArtsforArt%2FVision). During the early part of the performance, percussionist Jerome Cooper deployed a recording of Billie Holiday performing ‘Lover Man’: a meditation on technology, loss, and improvisation’s capacity for resurrection, excerpted here.
