Vice President Harris has had quite a road to second-in-command at the White House. … She made history as the first woman to become Vice President of the United States – her career starting in Northern California as a San Francisco prosecutor and then moved on to State Attorney General. Some have criticized her record on criminal justice, saying she enforced laws that sent a high rate of minorities to prison. Political experts don’t think that will be an issue. “The idea that ‘Oh, it’s a negative that she was a prosecutor’ – that is simply not the history of politics. No politician has ever been elected by saying, ‘I would like us to be softer on crime,’” says Tony Smith, UC Irvine professor of political science and law.
