More and more women are asking about unassisted birth. Before we judge them, we should ask what drove them there.

In Norway, Eva Rose watched women plan births at their beloved midwifery-led unit — only to have it closed with no alternative. Home birth was restricted by an ever-growing list of criteria. And so women gave birth alone.

The US faces its own version of the same crisis — Medicaid coverage gaps, birth center deserts, and a maternity care system that is failing the very women it claims to serve.
