Battlefield players have always had weapons, attachments, ranks, unlocks & other rewards to grind. BF3 had Operation Metro. BF4 had Metro & Operation Locker. If you wanted to grind XP or unlock attachments, everybody knew where the meat grinders were.
So what actually changed?
After last week's discussion about the Progression Tree Game versus the PTFO Game, I'm taking the conversation one step further. BF6 gives players plenty of challenges, skins, badges, weapons, attachments & Battle Pass rewards to chase, but having those incentives doesn't mean we're forced to prioritize them over playing the objective or winning the match...or does it?
Today, I'm looking at the difference between playing BF6 & collecting rewards, why progression itself isn't necessarily the problem & why player choice & priorities may explain more about modern Battlefield behavior than blaming DICE, EA, or the progression system.
The real question is:
