Think California Route 66 is all palm trees, retro neon, and beautiful Pacific ocean views? Think again! 🎬 In this episode of Photowalks, we are celebrating the Mother Road's centennial by exploring the final, 250-mile stretch of the historic trail—and discovering the rugged reality behind the postcard imagery.
We kick off right over the Arizona border in Needles, California, where summer temperatures regularly cross 120 degrees. From there, we hit the open desert to explore the famous almost-ghost town of Amboy, learn the tragic history behind the restoration of Roy's Motel & Cafe, and step inside the wildly eclectic, cult-classic Baghdad Cafe in Newberry Springs.
As we head west toward Los Angeles, the road shifts from haunting desert expanses to built-up suburban corridors and intense city grids. We’ll show you the current state of old 66 through Barstow and Victorville, listen to the wind play music through Elmer’s Bottle Tree Ranch, check into a concrete tepee at San Bernardino’s world-famous Wigwam Motel, and track down the unofficial museum at the site of the very first McDonald's.
Finally, we navigate the modern-day path down Foothill Boulevard, cruise past the stunning architecture of Pasadena, weave through downtown L.A., and expose the ultimate Route 66 twist: why the famous sign on the Santa Monica Pier isn't actually the true physical end of the road!
Grab your camera, get hip to this timely trip, and let's get our kicks on the real California 66!
