A deceptively simple novel, The Reader is a haunting book about reckoning with the past. The German author Bernhard Schlink writes about his country's past and how the postwar generation to which he belongs could deal with their elders.

In The Reader, both generations of Germans are personified in two characters who had a love affair at a time when passion and literature were the only things that mattered. Later, confronting the reality of the horrors of the Holocaust and shameful secrets of the past, both characters will have to come to terms with reality.
