"Queen of Spades" , 1910, is a Russian silent short film, directed by Peter Chardynin, based on the eponymous novel by Alexander Pushkin. The plot of the film is closed to the libretto of Tchaikovsky.
The young officer Hermann fanatically devoted to the card game, but never sits down for a game table, afraid to lose. Wanting to make fun of him, Tomski tells him the old fable about an old woman (Countess) who knows the secret of the three cards that magically always win. On one of the balls, Hermann meets Lisa, the niece of the Countess and her charms. Lisa gives him a key to the house of his aunt. Hermann enters the house of the Countess and ask the Countess about the secret of the three cards. Countess refuses to answer. Threatening, Hermann sends a gun at her and the old woman dies of a heart attack.
Night, going crazy, Hermann imagines that Countess cames to him and tells him about three winning cards - three, seven and ace. Overjoyed , Hermann goes to a meeting with Lisa, who still hopes that he loves her. But Hermann can not talk about anything except cards. In desperation, Lisa rushes to the channel. Evening in the gaming house Hermann puts at stake his fortune. He has the three and the seven. It is necessary only the ace to win, but when Hermann looks in his cards, instead of Ace of Spades he sees the ghost of the Countess as Queen of Spades.
