He was just following orders and never meant any harm, but it was too late! We don't really question authority figures like the police, our government, or even boss because we see them as the person in power. In fact, following orders from someone in power is actually human nature and whether we want to or not, we do it without even realizing it even if it's morally wrong. So how do we change this for the better and how can we be more aware of what we are doing?
Jacob was studying at Yale University when one day, he spotted a sign looking for paid volunteers in a school experiment. “We will pay for a day's work and will only take 1hr” read the flyer. Excited to earn some cash, Jacob showed up for the study the following day.
Inside, Jacob met a fellow student, Wallace, and the lead experimenter who had them draw straws. “The short straw is the ‘learner’ and will remember a list of words. The other person will be the teacher and quiz them” said the experimenter. Wallace drew the short straw.
The experimenter strapped Wallace to electrical wires and told him, “For every wrong answer you will be shocked by your teacher, Jacob. If you get a correct answer, nothing will happen”. He then walked Jacob to the next room and showed him the shock panel.
"15v= slight and 450v = XXX. Is that a lot?" Jacob thought. “You will ask the student a question and if it's wrong, you will say “wrong” and shock him moving the intensity up each time. Don't worry. He can’t see or hear us, but we can hear him. You may begin" demanded the experimenter.
Wallace got the first 3 questions correctly “Great job!”, thought Jacob. But then, he got 5 in a row wrong. “Ahhhh!! Okay, this is starting to hurt now”. After the 8th shock, Jacob questioned the experimenter, “Excuse me, is this safe?” “Please continue”, he responded.
After 5 more wrong answers, Jacob looked down at his shock panel and saw it read 315v - close to the danger zone! “I-I don’t think this is safe. It might seriously harm him...” “The experiment requires you to continue," said the experimenter.
“AHHH Please, stop! I-I can't do this anymore!” exclaimed Wallace. “We are hurting him, we need to stop!” said Jacob. “It is absolutely essential that you continue. You have no other choice but to continue until the experiment is finished” demanded the experimenter. “I’m not responsible for what happens!”
Jacob was now at 450v (XXX) - the highest setting. “Please get it right Wallace, please answer it correctly” But there was only silence. “If the learner doesn’t respond, it is incorrect. Continue the procedure” said the experimenter.
He flipped the switch and still, there wasn't a single sound coming from the room. Jacob stared at the voltage meeter and began to sob realizing what he had just done. “Oh My God! I-I just killed him... why did I do that!? What have I done!?”
The experimenter left and when he came back, Wallace was next to him. “You’re alive! Are you okay? What happened?" questioned Jacob. “Everything is fine. I was never in any danger. It was all false” responded Wallace. “It was all a set-up and I wasn’t the subject, you were”.
This was the Milgram Shock Experiment designed to test a person’s influence to authority and see how much pain an ordinary citizen is willing to put on another human. In the study, over 65% of participants administered the highest possible level of shock - 450v. All participants reached 300v.
It’s almost human nature to obey an authority figure - even if that means possibly killing another person. But just because someone in power commands something, it doesn’t mean we you shouldn’t question the moral actions. If you know something is wrong or doesn’t feel right, speak up, and “Let your conscience be your guide”.

Mia: 350volts. Thats how much they used each time they treated me. My body went into uncontrollable seizures thrashing on the table until I passed out. I thought Id never leave that place. I thought Id be forgotten. It took 1 month until they deemed me safe to go back home...(Pause) Thats all I have to tell. Nothing else happened after that. You can take me back to my cell now.
Psychologist: Just one other thing before I see you tomorrow. This entry you wrote about your father, what happened? What are you hiding?”
Mia: Hide? Im not hiding anything and you said it yourself. Everything you need is in the notebook so why are you even questioning me?
Psychologist: Because Ive read this book multiple times and theres only one other entry that doesnt make sense and its written exactly the same as this and its years apart. So what happened that youre not telling?!

Psychologist: Stop playing games, Mia. Just tell the truth and let me help you!

Security guard: Dr. Thomas?
Psychologist: Please, not now we are in the middle of something.
Security guard: Im sorry to interrupt but they said it was urgent. He said hed like to speak with you.
Lawyer: Dr. Thomas, are you sure this will work? Shes not responding to you and frankly, Im not sure how this is getting us any closer to finding out who Rellik is.
Psychologist: Yes, its working. Shes just fighting me right now and I cant figure out why. Her stories, theyre missing pieces. Its difficult to see, I know, but give me some more time. She needs to open up and once we gain her trust, we can find him.
Lawyer: Time is something we dont have Dr.Thomas. Ive just been notified by the court. They want to send Mia back to ST Elizabeths Mental Asylum under Dr. Freemans care. The media is having a backlash and they want justice.
Psychologist: Dr. Walter Freeman? No, you cant do that. You know hell perform a lobotomy on her; it can kill her! Shes still young. You know this isnt right. I need you to stall them, please. Dont let them do this to her.
Lawyer: Ill try my best but were running out of time and by the looks of it, options as well.
Psychologist: (Stressed) “*sighs* There was this girl. Her entire life she was called crazy because she could feel others emotions before they even expressed it. An overactive imagination is what professionals said. Its a phase all young children go through. She will grow out of it.
Mia: Was it a phase or was she really crazy? Did she grow out of it?
Psychologist: No, it wasnt a phase and she never grew out of it but that day, her father said something that inspired her to help others. He said, Just because you are different, it doesnt mean you are crazy. Theres a lot of different people in this world who go on to do great things. So use your gifts and do great things.
Mia: That-That girl is you. Isnt it?

Mia: ...I wasnt born this way, deaf that is. But, I tried my best to act as normal as possible. That day my father couldnt handle the stares and whispers any longer. He hated the way people looked at us and was always embarrassed by their stares. Being sent to the hospital was the last straw for him and he made sure I knew I was...different.
