The Proclamation of Nuestra Señora de las Mesas as the Secondary Patroness of San Roque de Navotas Parish, Navotas City

On 26 July 2025, the Parish of San Roque de Navotas held the Proclamation of Nuestra Señora de las Mesas as the Secondary Patroness of San Roque de Navotas Parish, Navotas City.

The devotion to Nuestra Señora de las Mesas traces its origins to Notre Dame des Tables in Montpellier, France—named after the merchants’ tables once surrounding the church. The shrine housed a revered black wooden statue of the Virgin Mary on a Byzantine pedestal, fondly called the “Arms of the City.” Miracles in 1198 strengthened devotion, and her feast is celebrated on 20 January. Though the original church and statue were lost during religious upheavals, veneration continued in a Jesuit church built in 1707. Tradition holds that the parents of St. Roch, patron against plagues, prayed to her for a child who would grow up helping people during plagues.

The origins of the image of Nuestra Señora de las Mesas of Navotas are unknown, though it was found in the church convent for years. In 2014, during sanctuary repairs, it was enshrined alongside the original image of San Roque for public veneration. The parish studied the title and promoted devotion through processions and Marian events. Her first formal feast as the Festejada of the Parish's Sagalahan took place in 2022.
