In the latest episode of Hidden Brain, Scott Barry Kaufman, a cognitive psychologist and author, details how an IQ test given to him at an early age haunts him to this day.
This test was a major reason he was denied a real chance to explore his potential as a kid, so he set himself on a mission to destroy standardised testing, but along the way had his ideas and experience questioned.
For context, IQ tests were first developed explicitly to determine which students needed more assistance, not to evaluate their potential future performance.
IQ tests, along with many other standardised tests, donât capture the full potential of people - just their performance on a specific test at a specific point in their lives.
Nor do they account for someoneâs creative or social skills - attributes crucial to being a well-rounded and intelligent person.
Scott got caught up in this as a kid, but when he started to learn about the perplexing and intriguing patterns standardised tests uncovered, he began to love IQ tests!
Itâs a great episode that explores how hard findings need to be considered in a broad context. Go give it a listen.

Say hello to Demodex folliculorum, 0.3mm long organisms that live their whole lives deep in your delicious skin.
More than 90% of us are hosts to these mites, and have given them room and board since popping out the womb as theyre passed on to us during breastfeeding.
According to Dr Alejandra Perotti, we should be grateful to house the mites and have such an intimate relationship with them.
She said âThey clean our pores and keep them flat⌠they donât do any damage⌠[At] night, whilst were in a deep sleep, they visit the pores to have sex and have babies,
A recent study shows their DNA is eroding, meaning theyâre close to extinction.
You see, theyâre adapting to us more, leading to them losing more genes, and eventually theyâll become entirely dependent on us for their existence.
Because of this dependence they wont be able to leave our pores and find new mates to couple with, doomed to become incels.
Theyâre associated with healthy skin, so if we lose them our largest organ MITE suffer.
