The Prince: Lessons from Machiavelli, pt. 2:
Machiavelli opens The Prince with Lorenzo di Piero Medici and proceeds to describe the differences between what he calls a 'hereditary monarchy' and a 'mixed monarchy'. Where as the hereditary monarch has the benefit of inheriting long established tradition and order the mixed monarch has to contend with incorporating a foreign people into his domain which presents all manner of challenges.
