Did you know one element can make a magnet dramatically stronger?

Neodymium is a rare earth element in the powerful permanent magnets found in cell phones, electric vehicles, robotics, medical devices, and many defense technologies. Because these magnets are essential to modern energy systems and national security, the U.S. Department of Energy identifies neodymium as a critical material.

In this video, David Parker, who leads ORNL’s Materials Theory Group, demonstrates how a neodymium-iron-boron magnet differs from a traditional magnet made of more common elements like iron, nickel, cobalt and aluminum.

Strengthening domestic supplies and advancing new ways to use critical materials helps support a more secure and resilient energy future.
