Because these magnets are essential to modern energy systems and national security, the U.S. Department of Energy identifies neodymium as a critical material.
In this video, David Parker, who leads ORNL’s Materials Theory Group, demonstrates how a neodymium-iron-boron magnet differs from a traditional magnet made of more common elements like iron, nickel, cobalt and aluminum.
