Every animal in the ocean depends on the microscopic plants and animals known as plankton, which form the basis of the entire marine food web. They produce roughly half of Earth's oxygen, and play a huge role in regulating the climate by absorbing and storing carbon dioxide.

Scientists aboard OceanXplorer are peering into the plankton communities in the Red Sea to find out more about the role these tiny creatures play in this unique ecosystem.
