This was in fact just the beginning of an era known as the pornocracy, in which one Italian family held power over like half a dozen popes who were all said to be gambling with pagan gods and drinking toasts to Satan. In particular, a woman named Marozia, the world’s first and foremost pornocrat, was both the mother of a pope, the lover of a pope, the grandmother of two more popes, the great-grandmother of two more popes, and the great-great-grandmother of another pope.
