This isn’t about politics. It’s not about tariffs. And it’s definitely not about one more trade deal fixing everything.
China is actively shrinking its hog herd — by roughly the equivalent of the entire U.S. sow herd. That means millions fewer pigs. And fewer pigs means dramatically less soybean meal demand. Dead sows don’t eat soybeans, and neither do piglets that never get born.
When you run the math, China simply doesn’t need the volume of soybeans it once did — and won’t going forward. Meanwhile, we’re still planting 80+ million acres and hoping exports bail us out.
That’s false hope.
