Mortgage rates hit a one-year high this week, and the reason isn't the housing market. It's the bond market.

Government debt sold off across four major economies at once. The US 10-year Treasury pushed to a near three-year high, the 30-year to levels last seen in 2007, Japan's 10-year crossed 3% for the first time since 1996, UK gilts hit their highest since 2007, and German bunds reached 2011 levels. All in the same week.

Underneath it sits the arithmetic. US gross national debt passed $40 trillion for the first time last month. French public debt is above 117% of the size of its economy. Japan's is more than double.

Then layer on a war. Brent crude is around 30% above its pre-war level, refined fuels have climbed faster than crude, and that is inflation arriving at the pump before it arrives in any government data.

And there's one borrower in this story that isn't a government at all. The hyperscalers building AI data centres have issued more than $200 billion of bonds this year, increasingly in euros. Government debt and corporate AI debt are now competing for the same lenders.

Every one of those should have been a gold story. Gold and silver both fell instead, silver harder than gold.

Megan walks through why, why she doesn't read it as the structural case breaking down, and the argument she found most persuasive this week: that the bond market may be doing the job politicians have spent years avoiding.
