Step by step method to cut a carbon steerer tube, with kevlar thread like those found on Time forks.
1. Assemble your headset with every spacer stem and shim needed.
2. Score a mark at the top of them onto the steerer tube.
3. Measure the depth of the lip on the compression bung
4. Check your manual for how much gap to leave- usually 2-3mm
5. Add these together, minus the width of your saw blade (1mm) and mark a second line under your first score line. This is your cut mark.
6. Tightly wrap masting tape against your cut mark, you now have a fill cut line and protection.
7. Line this up with your carbide saw blade in a cut guide.
8. Put on a respirator
9. Cut slowly at various angles using soapy water to keep the dust down and lubricate the cut.
10. Finish the edge with 180 grit sandpaper to a slightly round edge and perfectly perpendicular.
