In 1992, Montblanc launched a pen that would help change the world of fine writing instruments forever.
In this video, we discover together the Montblanc Patron of Art Hommage à Lorenzo de’ Medici 4810: the first edition of what would become one of Montblanc’s most important limited-edition collections.
Before the early 1990s, the idea of the modern luxury pen collectible was very different from what we know today. With the Patron of Art series, Montblanc introduced a new proposition: a writing instrument could be more than a prestigious object designed to be used. It could tell a story, celebrate history and culture, be produced in a strictly limited quantity, and become something collectors actively searched for.
Limited to 4,810 pieces worldwide, the 1992 edition paid tribute to Lorenzo de’ Medici, one of the great patrons of Renaissance art and culture. Its elaborate design, precious materials and historical narrative represented a radically different approach to the writing instrument.
More importantly, it established a formula that would become fundamental to the modern fine-writing industry: limited production, artistic execution, cultural storytelling and collectibility.
More than three decades later, we go back to the beginning and examine the pen that started the Patron of Art collection and explore why the Lorenzo de’ Medici remains such an important piece of modern pen history.
