What I find truly wonderful about Studio Ghibli is not only the power it gives viewers to draw out their full creativity through its imaginative characters, stories, and narrative, but also the new thought in innovation inspired by pushing people to believe in the beauty of fantasy.
Music is so powerfully evocative when paired with a visual; Ghibli is no stranger to this. Every film is joined by magical sounds that can reproduce the images in the film without actually seeing the visuals. The melodies are not only strikingly original and musical but they fit the movies perfectly. It's not strange to say that Joe Hisaishi is a genius.
I think a struggle for many people covering Ghibli music is the ability to retain the feel of the entire orchestration. When you're using just piano to cover a song with a multitude of parts, it's hard to convey the same imagery that the original has. In this cover, I try using very colorful and strange sounds to fill the void of other instruments. Many chords are atypical and I don't even know what I'm playing - well, I mean, it's improv, so it's not like you can plan everything out. But regardless, I feel that Totoro was the gateway into Ghibli for many and thus a good cover was deserving. I've played this song for some years now and I've tried recording it multiple times but it's never been up to the standard I believe it should be at. Even this cover may not be at the standard for me; I'm not quite sure of that myself, yet. However, this was recorded during one of the times where I was just feeling in the mood, which is a time where I must express myself through the piano, and so I feel like this recording is a genuine demonstration of my emotion, what most musicians aim to reach with their arrangements. It may not be perfect, but I can't deny that I like this cover.
This improv session was heavily title driven; I used the title, "The Path of Wind" to come up with the sound I wanted. I also tried to stay away from jazz undertones as much as possible for this one.
