The D&D owlbear looks like a dime-store joke monster, but Gary Gygax built its 2026-verified B/X stat block to genuinely end fourth-level fighters in one round — and most DMs still don't run it that way.

The owlbear traces back to a bag of unlicensed, unmarked plastic "prehistoric animal" toys Gary Gygax picked up at a dime store in the early 1970s — Hong Kong-made kaiju knockoffs that also gave us the rust monster and the bulette. That origin gets treated as proof the owlbear was never really designed. The stat block says otherwise: AC 5, HD 5, two claws and a bite at 1d8 each, and a bear hug that stacks an automatic 2d8 on top with no attack roll if both claws connect — up to 40 points of damage in a worst-case round, with an average hug-round landing in the low twenties.
