Godzilla 2000 can and will be remembered as one of the most calculated corporate course corrections in modern cinematic history, for better or for worse depending on how you look at it. After closing the Heisei era with the critically and commercially successful Godzilla vs. Destoroyah in 1995, Toho had deliberately put their flagship monster on a decade-long hiatus to clear the global marketplace for a Sony/TriStar trilogy of films that would have introduced the King Of The Monsters to a whole new generation of kids across the pond in America. Then Roland Emmerich's Godzilla dropped in May 1998 and immediately complicated that plan. The backlash from fans and Toho executives was severe for a multitude of reasons. Within two months of the American film's release, Toho mobilized under producer Shogo Tomiyama and fast-tracked a Japanese-produced reboot.
