The biggest revelation lately has been the experience of apathy, the disinterest, indifference, lack of general concern and depth of feeling in the middle space. This is something I’ve experienced plenty of throughout my experience with bi polar and have never been able to hone in on the word for it/ never understood it as a symptom. After hearing someone else with bipolar disorder talk apathy, and seeing how many other people with bi polar disorder express their experience with apathy as an unspoken symptom, I realized this critical stage in the process of the “swing” could possibly be a potential space for intervention, coping mechanisms, and resources in order to create a buffer.
Of course impulsivity is a common symptom but sometimes it doesn’t seem outwardly as extreme as hyper sexuality can appear from the outside looking in, or how euphoria and grandiosity might seem. It’s worth mentioning that impulsivity can seem like focus, honing in “Jack of all trades” behavior, multitasking, being “courageous”. Symptoms like impulsivity present very differently person to person, when I quit my job to start a business this seemed like someone with a good idea who can make it happen and has lots of experience, taking a leap of faith with a high likelihood of success. From the outside looking it, it seemed like a logical next step given my experience in my field. The energy output during manic and hypo manic states can appear to be the energy of a very capable person. Someone who can get shit done. Someone who can take on three jobs a full time school schedule and a full family schedule. Often I think it gets mixed up because we live in a hyper productive society.
