If America is an experiment in freedom, is it important for citizens to have internal moral restraints? A working ‘moral compass’ so to speak? The founders certainly thought so.
This is why they required office holders to believe in a future state of rewards & punishments; namely those described in the Bible. Office holders were supposed to acknowledge that their sovereignty came from The Creator, and that the same sovereignty was possessed by each and every citizen. This is reflected in each of the Original 13 State Charters.
