Baseball legend Jumpin' Joe Dugan’s career spanned 14 years, playing with five teams throughout his major league career, and played in five World Series Championships (winning three) with the New York Yankees. He played mostly third base throughout his career, and was picked up his first season in 1917 at the age of 20 by the great Connie Mack, to play with the Philadelphia Athletics. That season was also when he acquired his nickname, by taking numerous leaves without permission or authorization.
Jumping Joe’s first championship came in 1923, where he was also named by some of the media, the hero of the series by his spectacular defensive performance and even his offensively tinged hitting. His next two seasons, he remained elite at his position and was recognized for his outstanding performance. At the beginning of the 1927 season, he was named the starting third baseman, for what most baseball historians consider the greatest baseball team of all-time, and subsequently nicknamed “Murderer’s Row.” The nickname is in particular describing the first six hitters in the 1927 team lineup: Earle Combs, Mark Koenig, Babe Ruth, Lou Gehrig, Bob Meusel, and Tony Lazzeri.
Joe Dugan and his wife are buried at Mount Calvary Cemetery in Roslindale, MA just south of Boston. His monument is located in Section 16, Grave 241 in the center of the narrow section which sits in the very corner of the cemetery.
