Before it was a series, Kenobi was pitched as a film—and the original duel wasn’t on a quarry planet. It was on a space station breaking apart in a planet’s atmosphere. In writer Stuart Beattie’s version, Vader wins. He pushes Obi-Wan off the failing station. They’re separated—each coming to different conclusions.
Obi-Wan leaves with the truth his brother is dead—Anakin is gone. He feels absolved because it was Vader, not himself, who killed Anakin. Vader leaves with his own truth: Kenobi is dead. So when he senses him years later, that shock in A New Hope finally makes sense. Vader thought he’d buried his past. Turns out, it was just waiting on the Death Star.
