🧶 Hook and Sip: Can I Re-Create the First Known Granny Square?
Welcome to another Hook and Sip! ☕🧶
This week, we're stepping back into crochet history and taking on a rather fascinating challenge:
Can I recreate the very first known published Granny Square — using nothing but the original image?
Long before we called them Granny Squares, this design was described as an “afghan square” for a “crazy” afghan. The design was created by Mrs Phelps and was published circa 1885, making it one of the earliest known published examples of what we now recognise as the Granny Square.
But here's the challenge…
👉 There is no modern pattern for me to follow.
👉 I'm working from the historical image of the square alone.
👉 I'm going to see if I can work out the construction, stitches and techniques for myself!
Will I manage to recreate it?
Will I get completely lost somewhere in the middle?
Or will this little piece of crochet history reveal its secrets?
