After Japan's attack on Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941, which marked the United States' entry into the war, seventeen-year-old Murphy attempted to enlist in the Marine Corps. However, his height of five feet five inches was not sufficient for acceptance. The same thing happened in the Air Force. The Army remained his only option, but he was also rejected here, this time for being underage. This did not deter him. With the help of one of his sisters, he presented falsified documentation that made him appear old enough, and finally, his entry was approved.
