I wanted to share something personal because it’s genuinely changed how I spend money over the last month.
About four weeks ago, I made a ridiculously simple spreadsheet. Nothing fancy. No apps. No bank accounts linked. Just a Google Sheet. Somehow, that one spreadsheet is now saving me thousands of dollars a year.
Here’s the relatable part. I work from home. I record, edit, and create everything from home. My kids are sometimes home too. If you work remotely, you already know the feeling. At a certain point, eating out isn’t about food. It’s about getting out of the house before your head explodes. So I’d grab a $10 or $15 lunch just to escape.
It wasn’t a cooking issue. I enjoy cooking and I’m good at it. It wasn’t really a money issue either. The problem was that those small purchases were silent. They didn’t feel expensive, but they added up fast.
Once I started tracking every purchase immediately, something weird happened. I didn’t want to eat out anymore. There was a moment that really hit me. I was about to sit down at a restaurant I go to all the time, opened my spreadsheet on my phone, and thought, I don’t even need to be here. I left and made food at home.
That awareness alone changed everything. I started cooking more, eating better, and spending way less without feeling restricted. The spreadsheet takes seconds to update. Three numbers and you’re done. There’s one monthly budget number and everything else is automatic. Green days mean you stayed under. Red days mean you didn’t. No guilt. Just information.
