Zez Retro | The one of a kind S-Video to RGB converter from Japan @ZezRetro | Uploaded April 2021 | Updated October 2024, 21 hours ago.
Around 1987 Sony produced the YR-421 S-RGB converter which takes S-Video and outputs RGB.
Spoiler Alert: It's not an up-scaler and doesn't increase the quality. It simply encodes the existing signal to RGB and it works totally fine with 240p.
I think this is a unique unit for another reason:
It was originally sold with a JP21 connector on the end. However, I came across a unit where the previous owner has chopped off the JP21 end and added this box which breaks it out into BNC.
I love the story behind interesting items like this. Today we can order any number of adapters online but back in the late 80's, some Japanese bloke needed to make this work on a professional monitor and had no choice but to mod it himself.
In this video I take a look at the mod and connect it to my BVM to see how it holds up over 33 years it was made.
I found the unit this unit for about 1000yen in a Hard Off Minoo, in the north of Osaka.
