For more than a thousand years, the legends of King Arthur have been retold, expanded, and reinvented. But the Arthur we picture today—the king of Camelot, the Round Table, Excalibur, Merlin, Lancelot, and the Holy Grail—is the product of centuries of storytelling. In this episode, we trace the remarkable evolution of the Arthurian legends, from their shadowy origins in post-Roman Britain through Geoffrey of Monmouth, the French romances of Chrétien de Troyes, Malory's Le Morte d'Arthur, Tennyson's Idylls of the King, T. H. White's The Once and Future King, and the many modern novels and films that continue to reinterpret the Once and Future King.

Along the way, we explore the historical debate over whether Arthur was a real person, how each generation reshaped the legend to reflect its own values, and why Arthur remains one of the most enduring figures in Western literature. More than the story of a single king, Arthur's journey is the story of how great myths survive—by continually changing while remaining unmistakably themselves.
