Having escaped the Lotus Eaters they meet again with terrible sea storms, and Odysseus’ ships run aground on the island of Cyclops, a race of savage giants who lived in caves in the hills.

Polyphemus, the biggest Cyclops of them all, sees the Greeks in his cave and becomes so furious that he starts to eat them. Odysseus thinks of a cunning plan – he gets Polyphemus drunk and then blinds him, then hiding beneath the Cyclops’ large sheep, Odysseus and his men escape from the cave.

The blinded Polyphemus is the son of Poseidon, so now Poseidon has even more reason to disrupt and delay Odysseus’ journey back to Ithaca.
