Circe has warned Odysseus about the dangers that await him on the seas. The first of these is the Sirens, half eagle and half woman, they are creatures who use their enchanting singing to lure sailors to a grisly death. All Odysseus’ men survive, but they must now encounter the terrible monsters Scylla and Charybdis who live on rocks either side of the narrow straits where Odysseus’ ship must pass. Unfortunately, six of the men are lost to these hideous creatures.
Their next stop is the island of the Sun where the sacred cows of the god Hyperion live. As soon as Odysseus’ men set foot on the island they kill a sacred cow and eat it, so when they sail away Hyperion destroys their ship with lightning. Odysseus is the only survivor.
Eventually he lands half-drowned on the shores of Ogygia, the home of the beautiful nymph Calypso. She falls in love with Odysseus and keeps him for seven years. Calypso is not willing to let Odysseus go, but after the goddess Athena has enlisted her father Zeus’ help, Calypso is compelled to help Odysseus leave.
On his journey Odysseus again meets with Poseidon’s anger and is hurled this time onto the shores of the Phaeacians. Here he meets the beautiful princess Nausica, daughter of Alcinous, King of the Phaeacians. She is charmed by Odysseus and falls in love with him, she and her father entreat Odysseus to stay, but he is determined to return to Ithaca. So Alcinous gathers his finest sailors together and orders them to take Odysseus home. When Alcinous’ sailors leave Odysseus in Ithaca he is still asleep, so they leave him to sleep under a bush.
