Odysseus disguises himself as an old beggar and sets off to the palace with Eumaeus (Telemahus has gone on ahead of them). At the palace gates Odysseus meets his old hunting dog, Argus. The dog is old and weak but recognises his old master, the dog dies happy.
Odysseus enters the Grand Hall of the palace and Penelope’s suitors laugh at him and he is treated badly. Penelope announces that she is going to choose a suitor now that her son has grown up, and she devises a contest. Eurylleia, Penelope’s servant, recognises Odysseus by a scar on his leg, but she stays silent.
When all the suitors fail to accomplish the task set by Penelope, (shooting an arrow through twelve hoops), the old beggar Odysseus asks to try. Then Odysseus and Telemahus begin to shoot all the suitors. One by one they are killed, with the help of the goddess Athena. Then the goddess restores Odysseus to his usual looks and Penelope rushes to his side. They are happily reunited and a great feast is held. Finally Odysseus is home is Ithaca with his wife, his son and his kingdom.
