When Odysseus awakes under the bush he is very confused so the goddess Athena, disguised as a shepherd girl, reveals to him that he is in Ithaca. She directs him to the house of his old servant Eumaeus, and tells him of the suitors who are approaching his wife Penelope.

Odysseus first presents himself to Eumaeus and his son Telemahus as an old warrior friend of Odysseus, but soon reveals his true identity. Odysseus’ reunion with his son is very happy and emotional. The three men decide that before Odysseus meets Penelope they must get rid of the suitors.
