Odysseus and his men sail away mourning for their lost friends. Soon they arrive on the enchanted and rocky island of Circe - a witch who can turn people into pigs. When Odysseus sends his men onto the island, she turns them all into pigs. He sets out to find his men, and on the way is visited by Hermes who tells him what has happened.

When Circe realises who Odysseus is, she changes his men back to humans. She welcomes them and invites them to stay for a whole year. They accept her offer, and resume their journey after a year’s rest. Circe advises Odysseus to stop at Hades, (the resting place of the soul), to visit his mother, who died a few years ago.
