A short student film / visual poetry about the magic 8-ball, a cherished childhood novelty, exploring the theme of finding an intense desire for reassurance.
This subject is a toy for entertainment; it’s a one-of-a-kind plastic sphere ball for asking questions. Whenever I encounter this object, I think about the skepticism, curiosity and anticipation of getting a response. Despite knowing it’s not real, the thoughts and feelings elicited make the object fun for lighthearted and casual use. I’m inspired to film about the magic 8-ball because I want to unveil the opposite—what if we take a simple plastic sphere ball and take it seriously? The object can indicate a person’s intense desire to find an answer when they are not reassured.
