On October 18, 2024, I was trying to capture the Comet Tsuchinshan-ATLAS . Venus was setting into the Pacific below the comet. I grabbed my camera and began to film it. Sadly, I had no tripod so Venus was jumping everywhere in my video. However, you can still see how it changes color and later in the video, the Novaya Zemlya effect of Venus.
The simulation was made by Siebren van der Werf. Siebren describes the simulation as "not necessarily accurate in all details, but “in spirit”."
Siebren writes:
"Absorption for different colours is not included. Also not included is an instrumental broadening of the image by Fraunhofer scattering. Even for a perfect camera or telescope you see a point source, such as a star, somewhat broadened,
just because your aperture is finite and so is your focal length. In your pictures, especially the last ones, you see the effect as a reddish shine around a brighter centre."
The simulation is reproduced in this video with Siebren's permission.
