26% lighter than the original — just 998g without the tripod foot
12mm shorter overall
~3.5x faster autofocus with Nikon's new Silky Swift VCM (SSVCM) system
40% better AF tracking while zooming
Up to 6 stops of Vibration Reduction (up from 5.5)
11-blade rounded aperture for smoother, more circular bokeh
Closer minimum focus distance: 0.38m at 70mm / 0.8m at 200mm (0.3x max reproduction)

18 elements in 16 groups (3 fewer than before)
Includes ED, Super ED, aspherical, aspherical ED, fluorite, and SR elements
Meso Amorphous + Arneo coatings to reduce flare and ghosting
