Here's a new #shorts video on what exactly a mole is in physics and chemistry!
Many of you may be familiar with the idea that 1 mol of substance contains 6.02 x 10^23 particles, i.e. the infamous Avogadro's number of particles. But let's get a bit more nitpicky here.
The old (pre-2019) definition of the mole was that a mole is an amount of substance that has the same number of entities as there are atoms in exactly 12 grams of Carbon-12. In other words, a mole is not a number, but rather an amount of stuff. Also, that stuff is only 1 mole of stuff when it has exactly the same number of entities (e.g. particles, marbles, cheese puffs, whatever) as there are atoms in exactly 12g of Carbon-12. This number HAPPENED to be 6.022 140 76 x 10^23 atoms, based on our best experiments at the time. However, this number is just an estimate, because experiments aren't perfect and we don't yet have infinite precision.
However, because this old definition of the mole relied on what exactly a gram means (after all it is based on 12g of C-12), the definition was changed in 2019, as part of the redefinition of all SI base units.
The mole is now defined as an amount of substance that has exactly 6.022 140 76 x10^23 entities. No more, no less. This means that if 12g of Carbon-12 doesn't have exactly this number of atoms, then 12g of Carbon-12 is not technically 1 mole of Carbon-12! Interesting right?
