"Jakarta is sinking so fast, it could end up underwater" read the New York Times in December of 2017. The city has responded to pressing climate change-related risks with the construction of a dyke and a reservoir, the relocation of vulnerable communities into safer areas and the modification of spatial and housing practices. But these survival-focused solutions are proving to fall short in terms of social inclusion and local sustainable development.
Researchers Hendricus Andy Simarmata (Universitas Indonesia) and Gusti Ayu Ketut Surtiari (Indonesian Institute of Sciences) stress the need for moving from the current adaptation planning to one that is transformative and truly inclusive of all Jakartans, especially those most affected by socioeconomic (and environmental) inequality.
