The U.S. Navy is quietly monitoring millions of square miles of open ocean using wind-powered drone boats that never need fuel and can stay at sea for up to a year at a time. The Saildrone Explorer — a 23-foot autonomous sailboat operated by Task Force 59 in the Middle East and 4th Fleet in the Southern approaches to the United States — is already tracking hundreds of thousands of contacts across thousands of square nautical miles, all for roughly $4.25 per square nautical mile per day. No crew. No fuel. No limits. This is what persistent maritime domain awareness looks like in 2026.
