J. Len Sciuto explains a little-known Navy policy that affected wartime records:
“At the direction of the President and Commander in Chief, the U.S. Navy determined that enemy ships not originally built in Japan would not be credited as legitimate sinkings, even if they were operating under Japanese control.”
According to Sciuto, that decision created a significant difference between ships actually sunk and those officially recognized in the historical record.
He then turns to the USS Bang, sharing some of its original specifications:
“When she was commissioned, the Bang measured 312 feet in length and was powered by four Fairbanks-Morse diesel engines. She could reach nearly 20 knots on the surface and about 10 to 11 knots submerged.”
