Is MW4 SBMM ruining the game? After playing the MW4 Beta, I think the MW4 matchmaking and lobby balancing were easily some of the biggest problems with Modern Warfare 4.
In this MW4 gameplay breakdown, we're looking at skill based matchmaking, Call of Duty matchmaking, lobby balancing, COD sweaty lobbies, team balancing, solo matchmaking, and whether the MW4 Beta matchmaking system actually delivered the more varied experience players were expecting.
After hours of MW4 testing, the biggest issue for me was how consistently exhausting the matchmaking became. Playing solo was especially brutal. I was constantly getting thrown into matches already in progress, landing on teams facing massive score deficits, and watching teammates get completely overwhelmed while the opposing team played like they were warming up for Challengers.
Then there was Open Matchmaking.
The MW4 Open playlist was supposed to give players an alternative where skill had less influence on matchmaking, but during my time with the Modern Warfare 4 Beta, Open Matchmaking often felt almost identical to Standard. The same COD sweaty lobbies, the same questionable lobby balance, and matchmaking searches that sometimes took forever.
That's why this isn't just another complaint about having to play good players.
The real problem with MW4 SBMM and Call of Duty matchmaking is the lack of natural lobby variety. Some games should be difficult. Some should be average. Some should be complete chaos. But when nearly every match feels like the matchmaking system is deliberately constructing the lobby around skill, public matches stop feeling organic.
We're breaking down the MW4 Beta, MW4 matchmaking, MW4 SBMM, skill based matchmaking, MW4 gameplay, Open Matchmaking, lobby balancing, COD sweaty lobbies, and why the current Call of Duty matchmaking system made what could have been a fun Modern Warfare 4 Beta completely exhausting.
Was your MW4 Beta experience the same? Did Open Matchmaking actually feel different from Standard, or did the MW4 matchmaking feel just as strict?
