Thousands of people walk through Stanley Park every day…
yet this rare gem goes unnoticed.
Just off the trail, in plain sight, grows a 10+ year old Agarikon (Laricifomes officinalis).
One of the rarest medicinal mushrooms — in part because it depends on old, mature forests, which are far less common than they once were.
Sometimes called the ghost or spirit mushroom, Agarikon carries a long lineage of use — from ceremonial and talismanic traditions among Indigenous peoples where it grows, to modern research exploring its powerful antiviral potential, linked to unique lanostane-type triterpenoids found in its perennial body.
But what strikes me most isn’t just its medicine.
It’s the reminder that something so powerful can exist quietly…
hidden in plain sight, unseen by most.
Tuning into it today, I felt that familiar connection —
the steady, ancient wisdom of the forest, always there for those who slow down enough to listen.
Sometimes the medicine isn’t just in the mushroom.
It’s in remembering how to see again…
with the heart as our primary organ of perception.
If you find one of these, please don’t harvest it.
Leave it as a forest ally — something to return to, not take from.
